SUMMARY

We rewied the problem of multidrug resistance to antimycobacterial drugs, adressing different aspects according to the epidemiological significance by reweing its concepts and mechanisms.

We also refer to the WHO/IUATLD Global Project on Antituberculosis Drug-Resistance Surveillance, with special emphasis to the results reported in Portugal, discussing the prevention strategies and the problems related to the laboratory methodology.
