SUMMARY

The Objectives of A Project To Screen the Early Manifestations of Airways Disease

The Pneumobil project arises as an answer to the lack of knowledge, in several countries, about the real incidence of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), also as a promotion of lung function tests for the study of respiratory diseases, and as a trial to setup predicted values in several lung function parameters, adapted to each country.

In order to reach these purposes, spirometry, as complete as possible, was usually the method of choice, and its completeness was also adapted to the local facilities.

Bronchodilation tests were used as a pattern to differentiate COPD from asthma. This report includes data from countries around the world, stressing the high percentage of abnormalities in the proband population (15% mean), along with the high incidence of smoking habits among these people.

For Portugal, the study group sets forward the objectives of the study, and the available facilities, whose main originality is the comparison between data from forced expiration manoeuvre and rest respiration (airways resistance through the forced oscillation method), in the same subjects and at the same time.
