SUMMARY

Hyperbaric oxygen (OHB) therapy is the intermittent administration of 100% oxygen at a pressure greater than sea level

The object of OHB is to reduce peripheral tissue hipoxia (vascular, traumatic, toxic or infectious) by increasing the tissue oxygen levels.

The indications for OHB include carbon monoxide poisoning, diving accidents (decompression sickness), gas embolism, gas gangrene, refractory osteomyelitis, acute traumatic ischemia, chronic wounds and thermal burns.

Although hyperbaric therapy is costly, the ability to reduce morbidity associated with acute and chronic tissue injury can be cost effective.
